Just reported in the media is news of a scam regarding callers pretending to be from Microsoft and alerting people to non-existant problems in the pc.

The callers then offer to fix the non-existant fault and charge the user for the privilege of doing nothing! Reports of sums like £185 for fixing nothing!!!

This has Pocket Pc 2003 Pro Preinstalled & Integrated Bluetooth.

There is a Leather Case (used ) , two good batteries, stylus, and charger all included.

The bits I dont have are the original box, the USB Cable and the SD blanking plate.

This is now surlus to requirements.

These little units are lovely little machines and are excellent value for money.

I personally used one for a long while before moving onto a newer model.

This stock is just in, and although they are second user, they will be thoroughly tested before being allowed out.

These units are ideal for browsing the web and for writing emails, and the software for that comes preloaded.( Windows XP ( OEM ), Internet Explorer ( fully patched ) and Outlook Express.) I can also preload Windows Defender ( the anti-spware package) and Avast Anti-Virus ( the free anti virus )*, so not only is it clean - it stays clean.

If you want a base unit, with duplicate factory restore discs ( original one were lost - but copies are specific to these pc's ) , then I can let the higher spec one go for £50, the lower spec for £40.

Orpington Computer Repair: Malware Removers Extraordinaire!

Beware the Malware.

Orpington Computer Repair have been instrumental in the removal of several nasty peices of Malware recently, and the nature of this Malware is important enough to highlight in a News Item.

These Malwares are pretending to be "XP Antivirus" and "XP AntiSpyware" and display themselves in XP colours and use very similar terminology to XP.

To the standard PC user they display themselves showing that your PC is infected with either Malware or Viruses, and lead you to 'purchase' the software in order to get rid of the Malware. Where, infact, this is itself Malware, and the best way to get rid of it is to use one of the free Anti-Spyware applications here.

The primary application for the successful removal in these cases has been Windows Defender. It would appear that the Malware process needs to be terminated in the Task Manager Process list first though, before installing the Anti-Malware application, otherwise the install could fail.

Look for "xpa.exe" for the XP Anti-virus variant, and similar "xp???????.exe" for the Anti-Malware.

Once the process has been stopped, install the Anti-Spyware program, allow the program to update its definitions and do a quick scan first. This should find and stop these Malwares. Once removed, reboot and run a full scan.

Linux has many flavours, but with the latest variants looking more user friendly its our job to keep abreast of the times and find out what the practical side is.

Our recent investigations are into one particular ditribution, Open Suse 10.1

Installation has become a lot easier with YAST ( Yet Another Setup Tool ) and from our perspectecive makes for installing and troubleshooting a lot more user friendly then the hard core linux of previous days.

Also with the inclusion of something called the NDIS WRAPPER, this allows a lot of network cards, not intended for Linux, to be used on linux with the Windows Drivers.

The different variants of Linux offer different solutions and we do not pertain to know all these.

However if you are looking for an operating system to load onto that old laptop instead of Windows 98, consider Open Suse 10.1. With Mozilla FireFox built in and with Free Open Office available, you could have a nicely functioning laptop for next to nothing. And you are recycling your equipment and breathing new life into it, that has to be better for the environment.
